Kidney transplantation is the best treatment option for end-stage kidney disease, returning the patient to normal health and full rehabilitation.
The organ donation rate in Hong Kong has been decreasing over the past few years, from around 30-40 donors per year, dropping to a record low of 25 donors for 2019, resulting in only 42 patients received kidney transplant from decreased donor in 2019.
As at 31 December 2019, 2268 patients are waiting for kidney transplant. On average, most patients had to wait for 5-6 years before the transplant, some patients have been waiting for 10 years.
